Jammu and Kashmir: One terrorist killed in encounter in Srinagar’s Khanyar

A terrorist was gunned down in an encounter with security forces in Srinagar’s Khanyar area of the Indian Union Territory Jammu and Kashmir, local security officials said on Saturday (Nov 2). 

Earlier, four security personnel, two from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and two from Jammu and Kashmir Police’s SOG (Special Operations Group), were injured in the gunfight.

Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kashmir Zone, Vidhi Kumar Birdi said that the terrorist has been identified as Usman and was the commander of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT).

IGP Birdi said that the killed terrorist was involved in the murder of Inspector Masroor in 2023.

“A cordon and search operation in the Khanyar area of district Srinagar has resulted in an exchange of fire. Police and security forces are on the job. Further details shall follow,” Kashmir Zone Police posted on X.

IGP Birdi told news agency ANI, “Now this operation has been completed. Security forces have killed a terrorist, who has been identified as Usman…, he was the commander of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and 4 security personnel have been injured. He is a foreign terrorist and his role and involvement in the murder of Inspector Masroor has come to light and further investigation is being done in this regard….”

A joint team reached the suspected area, where the militants were said to be hiding. Subsequently, the security personnel were fired upon which further led to a gunfight.

Earlier on Friday, the Indian Army took to X, stating that a suspicious movement was spotted in the general area of Bandipora. 

“On 01 November 2024 late evening, suspicious movement was spotted, in gen area Panar of Bandipora, by alert troops. On being challenged, terrorists opened indiscriminate fire and escaped into the jungle. Search Operation underway,” Chinar Corps, Indian Army said in a post on X.

On October 29, the security forces neutralised three terrorists in a high-stakes encounter in Akhnoor, Jammu and Kashmir, following an attack on an army convoy.
