Man with heart of gold: Rohit Sharma, Neeraj Chopra and other sporting stars react as Ratan Tata passes away
On Wednesday (Oct 9), Ratan Tata, chairman emeritus of one of India’s biggest conglomerates, Tata Sons, passed away at the age of 86. The news of his health deteriorating had been doing the rounds for a few days. He was admitted to the intensive care of the Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai early in the evening before the legend passed away.
N Chandrasekaran, chairman of Tata Group, said in a statement, “It is with a profound sense of loss that we bid farewell to Mr Ratan Naval Tata, a truly uncommon leader whose immeasurable contributions have shaped not only the Tata Group but also the very fabric of our nation.”
“On behalf of the entire Tata family, I extend our deepest condolences to his loved ones. His legacy will continue to inspire us as we strive to uphold the principles he so passionately championed,” he added.
Ratan Tata’s passing away led to reactions pouring in from all corners. The Indian sporting fraternity also joined in with senior men’s cricket team captain Rohit Sharma, Sachin Tendulkar, Shubman Gill, javelin superstar Neeraj Chopra, Venkatesh Prasad and Saina Nehwal reacting to the demise.

Who was Ratan Tata?
Tata took over as the chairman of the autos-to-steel conglomerate in 1991. He ran the group which was founded by his great-grandfather, Jamshedji Tata more than a hundred years ago. In 1996, he founded the telecommunications company Tata Teleservices and took over the IT company Tata Consultancy Services public after eight years.
After resigning, in 2012, Tata was conferred with the title of chairman emeritus of Tata Sons, Tata Industries, Tata Motors, Tata Steel and Tata Chemicals, as per the company website. During his tenure, the Tata Group achieved many highs, by acquiring Jaguar Land Rover, Tetley, and Corus. In addition, he introduced a retirement policy for directors over 75 years old.
Tata, who received the Padma Bhushan in 2000 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2008, was a visionary industrialist and philanthropist. He was also known for his kind nature and social work.
