BRICS Summit: PM Modi to hold bilateral meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping on Wednesday

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping are scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting in Kazan, Russia on Wednesday (Oct 23), Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri confirmed during a press briefing. 

“I can confirm that there will be a bilateral meeting held between Prime Minister Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping tomorrow on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit,” Misri said in a special Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) briefing.  

Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Kazan on Tuesday (Oct 22) to attend the 16th BRICS Summit.

Senior Russian officials greeted the Chinese president at the airport. 

He will be attending the BRICS Summit in Russia from Tuesday to Thursday at the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin. 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also reached Kazan earlier in the day and held a bilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. 

The BRICS Summit is set to take place in Kazan under Russia’s chairmanship on October 22-23.

The Summit, themed “Strengthening Multilateralism for Just Global Development and Security,” will provide an important platform for leaders to discuss key global issues,” according to Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

Moreover, China on Tuesday also confirmed that the two Asian giants had reached an agreement to end the border crisis.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said, “China and India have maintained close communication through diplomatic and military channels regarding border-related issues. Currently, the two sides have reached a solution on the relevant matters, which China views positively.”

“In the next phase, China will work with India to effectively implement the solution plan, Lin Jian added.
