Kolkata doctor murder-rape: CBI files chargesheet ruling out gangrape, says accused Sanjay Roy acted alone

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday (Oct 7) filed a chargesheet against Sanjay Roy, the prime accused in the gruesome rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in the eastern Indian city of Kolkata.

The chargesheet filed before a special court stated that Roy was working as a civic volunteer with the local police when he committed the crime on August 9. The victim had gone to the seminar room to sleep during a break when Roy pounced on her. The agency did not mention gang rape in the report, indicating that Roy acted alone to commit the crime.

The victim’s body was found the next morning by a junior doctor. The post-mortem report revealed that the victim had suffered 25 internal and external injuries.

Roy was caught on CCTV footage, entering the seminar room at 4:03 am on August 9 and came out after approximately half an hour. His Bluetooth earphone was also recovered from the scene of the crime which helped the authorities in indicting him.

The chargesheet states that Roy attempted to mislead the investigators during the probe when CBI came into the picture. During the lie-detector test, Roy claimed innocence, stating that the victim was already unconscious when he entered the hall.

Quizzed why he did not inform anyone about the incident, Roy said he was in a state of panic after seeing the woman injured.

The case led to outrage across the country regarding women’s safety and security. The junior doctors in the state of West Bengal went on protest demanding better working conditions and the resignation of several top administrators who seemingly played a role in the crime.

Having ceased the protests to rejoin their duties partially after a 42-day long strike last month, the doctors have once again started the sit-in, waiting for the Mamata Banerjee government in the state to fulfill their demands.

Last week, the doctors launched an indefinite hunger strike with Aniket Mahato, a junior doctor from RG Kar Hospital, joining six other fasting senior medics in the city’s Esplanade area.

Meanwhile, the then principal of the college, Sandip Ghosh, has been arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the CBI in two different cases of financial irregularities and evidence tampering.
