Legendary fashion designer Rohit Bal dies after prolonged illness
Noted fashion designer Rohit Bal is no more. The well known fashion designer had suffered a heart ailment last year and had returned to the fashion circuit a few weeks ago at the Lakme Fashion Week. He was 63.
Rohit Bal was considered one of the pioneers of Indian fashion whose designs challenged norms.. He was known for blending traditional aesthetics with contemporary flair and for marrying the cultural heritage of India with global fashion trends. Bal was known to include local artisans’ work in his designs which were loved globally.
He had been away from the fashion world in the past few years due to health issues.
The Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) confirmed the news with a post on their official Instagram handle. “We mourn the passing of Legendary designer Rohit Bal. He was a founding member of the Fashion Design Council of India. Known for his unique blend of traditional patterns with modern sensibilities, Bal’s work redefined Indian fashion, and inspired generations. His legacy of artistry, and innovation along with forward thinking will live on in the fashion world,” the post read.
As soon as the news came out, friends and family of the designer were seen rushing in to see him at Aaslok hospital in Delhi’s Safdarjung Enclave as the industry mourns his demise.
Rohit Bal’s last major runway appearance was at the 2024 Lakme Fashion Week X FDCI, where he presented his collection Kaaynaat and left everyone teary-eyed. He had Ananya Panday walk the show as showstopper.
