Maldives president India visit: ‘Will never do anything that undermines India’s security’, says Muizzu
Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu, who began his first state visit to India on Sunday (Oct 6), said that his government would never do anything that undermined the security of India.
Speaking to the Times of India (TOI), President Muizzu said that India was a valued partner and friend of the Maldives, and the relationship was built on mutual respect and shared interests.
Muizzu said that his country would continue to prioritise its longstanding and trusted relationship with India.
‘Maldives will always come first, but…’
Since coming to power, the Muizzu government has taken several steps that have been unconventional from the point of view of India-Maldives ties. The removal of Indian troops from the country was the main election campaign of Muizzu’s party.
Last year, three ministers of his government made derogatory remarks against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi which further strained the relationship between the two countries.
The Maldives government quickly distanced itself from these comments by the ministers, and Muizzu said he took against such ministers who made these remarks about Modi.
Speaking to TOI, Muizzu said on Sunday, “My policy is Maldives First. For me, the Maldives will always come first. But respect for our neighbours and friends is embedded in our DNA.”
“Indians have always been welcomed in the Maldives, Indians continue to prosper in the Maldives, and be safe and happy,” he said and pointed out that Indians make a positive contribution to the Maldivian society.
The president also told the publication that he was pleased with the progress made on several key projects and initiatives announced during Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar’s recent visit to the Maldives.

Jaishankar expressed appreciation for Muizzu’s commitment to strengthening the India-Maldives relationship. He also expressed confidence that Muizzu’s talks with Prime Minister Modi will give a new boost to their friendly ties.
Muizzu is now scheduled to meet PM Modi, President Droupadi Murmu, and other key officials.
